Introduction: The data presented in this report suggest that the dramatic increase in the prevalence of surgical sterilization that occurred in the United States between 1965 and 1988 may have leveled off between 1988 and 1995. In 1965, 16 percent of married women 15–44 years of age reported a sterilizing operation undergone by either themselves or their husbands. In 1988, the prevalence had risen to 42 percent, and in 1995 the prevalence remained at about 41 percent. The data show that tubal ligation and vasectomy were chiefly responsible for the overall increase in prevalence of surgical sterilization in the 1970’s and 1980’s. The percent of women reporting hysterectomies, based on self-reported national survey data, has remained relatively stable over the period from 1965 through 1995, though analyses of hospital discharge data suggest that hysterectomy rates may be declining (1,2).
